Mat Rush

  • robust clumps of grass-like plant to 1 metre
  • can be found in moist to dry areas, more commonly close to watercourses (where it stabilises banks)

Leaves

  • Linear, long leaves to 1 metre
  • tip of leaves shaped like a ‘W’

Fruit

  • dark brown seed capsules approximately 5mm in length

Human Use

  • leaves woven for dilly bags and baskets
  • white base of leaves eaten

Fauna Use

  • flowers frequented by a variety of insects, including the various species of the Ochre Skipper Butterflies
