Birds are endothermic (warm blooded) vertebrate animals that have skin covered in feathers. All birds have beaks and lay eggs.
Not all birds can fly. The Emu and Cassowary are examples of large, flightless Australian birds.
The Short-tailed Shearwater or Muttonbird (Puffinus tenuirostris) migrates annually, covering a distance of 15,000 kilometres in as little as six weeks. They spend the summer in SE Australia before flying to north America around April.
