Description

selenite crystals

Selenite forms when bodies of water evaporate leaving behind chemicals that were dissolved in them. The name originates from the Greek word meaning moon and the Greek Goddess of the moon, Selene. Selenite has a natural thermal composition which makes it warm to touch and is most often transparent and colourless. It is also a very soft mineral and can be easily scratched with a fingernail. It is extensively used in making plaster, fertilizer and soil conditioner. Selenite can form large crystals such as those inside the Naica caves in Chihuahua, Mexico where a single crystal was recorded at a length of 10 metres and weighed over 55 tonnes.
