​Derivation of name

Cupaniopsis  from Latin Cupania, a tropical genus and named after 17th century botanist, Francesca Cupani; and Greek opsis resemblance, referring to the close relationship of these Australian and New Caledonian species to Cupania​

anacardioides - from Latin anacardium and Greek eidos resembling, because of the similarity in foliage to that of a species of Anacardium.

Description 

  •  Small shade tree to 10 m
  •  Leaves to 15 cm
  •  Greenish-cream flowers to 6 mm
  •  Yellow to orange 3 lobed fruit to 15 mm splitting to reveal 3 black fruit enclosed in orange aril

Human uses

Edible ripe orange fruit
